    太极拳经 Tai Chi Quan Classic 一举动,周身俱要轻灵,尤须贯串。气宜鼓荡,神宜内敛,无使有缺陷处,无使有凹凸处,无使有断续处。
    Once move, the whole body should be light and agile, especially all the parts linked as if threaded together. Qi is to be bulging/booming and spreading (in entire body); mind (i.e., “Shén”,神) is to be concentrated inwardly, (so one can execute posture) without defect, without the improper inward or outward action/performance, without intermittent action/performance.
    其根在脚,发于腿,主宰于腰,行于手指,由脚而腿而腰,总须完整一气,向前退后,乃能得机得势。有不得机得势处,身便散乱,其病必于腰腿求之,上下前后左右皆然。
    (The Qi and Internal strength (i.e., “Jìn”, 劲) should be) rooted in the feet, released though the legs, dominated by the waist, and manifested through hands and fingers.
    From feet to legs to waist, the motion should be integrated whole, so that while advancing or retreating, one can grasp the opportunity promptly to get an advantageous momentum. If (one fail to grasp) right timing and advantageous momentum, the movements will become disordered. The problem must be sought in the legs and waist. The principle applies for all the movements upward and downward, forward and backward, leftward and rightward.
    凡此皆是意,不在外面,有上即有下,有前则有后,有左则有右。如意要向上,即寓下意,若物将掀起而加以挫之之力,斯其根自断,乃攘/坏之速而无疑。虚实宜分清楚,一处有一处虚实,处处总此一虚实,周身节节贯串,无令丝毫间断耳。
    All the movements are motivated by one’s intention and mind (i.e., “Yì”, 意) internal not/instead of external, so downward goes with upward, retreating goes with advancing, rightward goes with leftward (Note: the unity of opposites in Yin&Yang). When moving/attacking upward with intention, one must simultaneously have intent downward; (on the other hand) if the opponent is throwing upward, beat his lower part, so his root will be broken off automatically, then he will be defeated quickly and certainly.
    The insubstantial and substantial (or empty and full, or deficiency and excess. i.e., Yin and Yang) should be clearly differentiated. At any position where there is insubstantiality, there must be substantiality; In other words, every position always has both insubstantiality and substantiality.
    The entire body should be threaded together through every joint without the slightest break anywhere and anytime.
    长拳者,如长江大海,滔滔不绝也。掤、捋、挤、按、采、挒、肘、靠,此八卦也。进步、退步、左顾、右盼、中定,此五行也。掤、捋、挤、按,即乾、坤、坎、离、四正方也。采、挒、肘、靠,即巽、震、兑、艮、四斜角也。进、退、盼、顾、定,即金木水火土也,合之则为十三势也。
    Tai Chi is also called long fist (or lasting fist), (which means the movements spread) continuously without end, look like water flowing in great river, or the rolling waves in ocean. Ward off (掤Péng), Roll back (捋Lǚ), Press or Squeeze (挤Jǐ), Push (按Àn), Pull down (采Cǎi), Split (挒Liè), Elbow strike (肘Zhǒu), Body strike (靠Kào), are the equated to the Eight Trigrams. Advance (进Jìn), Retreat (退Tuì), Step left or Gaze left (顾Gù), Step right or Gaze right (盼Pàn), Central equilibrium (定Dìng) are equated to the Five Elemental Phases. (To be specific), Ward off, Roll back, Press, Push are ☰ (乾 qián), ☷ (坤 kūn), ☵ (坎 kǎn), ☲ (离lí), respectively, they represent four directions; Pull down, Split, Elbow strike, Body strike are ☴ (巽 xùn), ☳ (震zhèn), ☱ (兌 duì), ☶ (艮 gèn), respectively, they represent four corners. Advance, Retreat, Step left, Step right, Central equilibrium are Metal (金Jīn), Wood (木mù), Water(水shuǐ), Fire(火huǒ), Earth(土tǔ). All together in they are termed as “Thirteen Postures”.
    原注云:此系武当山张三丰祖师遗论。欲天下豪杰延年益寿,不徒作技艺之末也。
    An annotation appended to this Classic reads: This treatise was left by the patriarch Zhang Sanfeng of Wudang Mountain so that worthy heroes in world to achieve longevity, and not merely as a means of martial skills.
